Lydia Sagar, Psy.D.
Founder / Chief Licensed Psychologist
I hold a Master’s and Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Regent University (Virginia) and completed my doctoral internship at Genesis Counseling Center (Hampton). During my internship, I received specialized training in comprehensive psychological testing for children, teens, and adults with various mood, learning, developmental, and behavioral disorders. My training also included faith-based counseling and social skills groups for young children. As a supervisor to several doctoral interns, I have enjoyed mentoring and training others in the field.
For my doctoral thesis, I had the privilege of studying and publishing on the impact of parental incarceration on young children. My book “Out of the Shadows – An Examination of the Needs of Children of Incarcerated Parents” showcases the research I have conducted, along with the impact of an 8-week treatment program that I designed and implemented.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I have worked in the geriatric field for six years, providing individual and family therapy for seniors and their families in nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities. This experience has taught me how to work collaboratively with different disciplines, such as physical and occupational therapy, social work, and nursing. I have also worked as a clinical supervisor for those pursuing their mental health degrees, leading by example with a hands-on approach.
My work with veterans has involved conducting disability evaluations for various mental disorders, especially post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) resulting from combat and sexual trauma. In doing these evaluations, I have learned to take into account every detail from multiple sources to provide quality service.
Finally, I have worked in a private practice setting, specializing in conducting medical clearance evaluations (pain pump and spinal column stimulator) and clearance evaluations for bariatric/weight loss surgery.
On a personal note, I grew up in India and have been fortunate to travel to many parts of the world. As a result, I am passionate about learning about other cultures. I enjoy cooking, watching movies, interior decorating, and, on any given day, a good warm cup of coffee. I am happily married with two beautiful children and look forward to the opportunity to work with you.

Carlos Hurtado, M.A.
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
I was originally born in Nicaragua and came to the US as a young a child. As such my life experience growing up mirrors that of a first-generation Latino-American. Specifically, I did not experience any significant amount of culture shock as compared to my parents and older siblings. My biggest concern growing up involved my struggle to practice speaking my primary language, Spanish, while learning to speak English fluently for school. I am, ultimately, thankful to my parents for encouraging me to keep my Nicaraguan culture and language alive.
I grew up in Southern California; receiving my bachelor’s in psychology from CSUN and, later, my master’s in psychology from Antioch University in Santa Barbara. After receiving my Masters, I spent 14 years working for Ventura County Behavioral Health. County services was more designed to provide mental health services for the more severely mentally ill clients. At VCBH, I spent several years working for their intake department conducting psychological assessments for the adult and youth division, triaging cases, and making referrals to the appropriate level of care. I finished my time at VCBH working at one of their outpatient adult clinics providing individual therapy and leading various groups.
I find my therapy style to be eclectic. In my master’s program we focused on a theoretical model created by Carl Rogers. County services focused on a more evidenced based Cognitive Behavioral model. In the trauma group I helped facilitate, we used a treatment model called Seeking Safety. As such, I find myself incorporating a number of different modalities in therapy, most of which tend to be set on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy foundation. I find this effective to better understand not only our perceptions on events but also how these perceptions impact our emotions and behaviors.
Here at Salt and Light, I look forward to using my experience to help serve the local community.

Kaeli Cantwell, M.S.W.
Licensed Clinical Social Worker
As a Clinical Social Worker, I want to make therapy accessible to as many people as possible. I obtained a bachelor’s degree in social work from Texas Women’s University in 2015 and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Texas Arlington in 2016. I first became interested in social work after volunteering at a domestic violence shelter for women. Through this experience I learned the importance of having support, community involvement, and healing. Overall, I have worked primarily in nursing homes, hospice, and PHP/IOP mental health settings. However, my deep passion for therapy comes from witnessing firsthand the benefits that come along with it. Throughout life there are many challenges and as a therapist I take a collaborative approach to process and identify goals.
I understand therapy can be daunting for many and I believe there is courage in seeking help. Through therapy individuals can become empowered to create the life they want. My goal is to use a client centered approach to create a safe, supportive environment for individuals and families from all cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. My clinical experience
Outside of being a therapist I come from a military family but have lived in Texas most of my life and I consider Texas home. I have a love for dogs and have a four- year old shepherd mix of my own. In my spare time I enjoy cooking, attending shows, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. I am looking forward to meeting you and feel honored to support you through your healing process.

Tabitha J. Padilla-Chiles, M.B.A
Doctoral Candidate Psy.D.
I am currently a doctoral candidate in Clinical Psychology at Capella University. I hold a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. Throughout nearly all my doctoral courses, I have been honored to be on the President’s List due to my high GPA. Additionally, I speak English and Spanish fluently (native level).
During my practicum, I focused on Forensic Psychology, working with individuals of all ages within the prison system. I evaluated adult and juvenile detainees to determine their suitability for trial and provided support in group therapy sessions for adult detainees. Additionally, I conducted research on relevant Texas and national court cases about Forensic Psychology and relevant competency programs. I also had the opportunity to audit a Forensic Psychology class at Texas Christian University, where I learned about the significant role of legal precedents in the field.
In my internship, I specialized in evaluating children aged 3 and older for conditions such as Autism and ADHD, among other psychological disorders. I also evaluated and treated adults for anxiety, depression, prolonged grieving, and personality disorders. My experience includes conducting geriatric evaluations for social security disability claims and providing psychotherapy using various models such as psychodynamic therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and play therapy.
My inspiration for pursuing a career in Clinical Psychology stems from my mother, Leticia Garza, a clinical psychologist. Observing her work with individuals from diverse backgrounds instilled in me a deep appreciation for the importance of mental health care. I firmly believe that seeking mental health help is crucial to ending the negative stigma associated with our field and ensuring that everyone receives the support they deserve.
For my dissertation, I am researching the cultural competency of mental health professionals working with minority populations. My focus is on the disparities in access to mental health care for minorities, as they often have fewer resources and opportunities. I believe it is crucial for everyone to have access to well-qualified providers to achieve mental well-being.
On a personal note, I grew up in Mexico and Texas, which has allowed me to experience and learn from various cultures. I enjoy watching documentaries and movies, reading books, attending concerts, practicing martial arts, and dancing. In my spare time, I cherish spending time with my child and encouraging her in all her endeavors.
